Apple's Hiring Principles

A recent article from Angela Ahrendts, senior vice president of Apple Retail, discusses the attributes she looks for to determine if candidates will be a good fit and able to thrive over the long term.

In the article, titled ‘How I Hire: My Guiding Principles’, Ahrendts writes:

“By the time they have reached my office, I think it is pretty safe to say they are incredibly smart in their field. I want to make sure they are culturally compatible. Are they empathetic, compassionate, caring and giving of their mind and heart?”

In this article, Angela Ahrendts identifies four guiding principles to hire and retain great talent:

  • Me versus we. Asking questions about family, friends, peers and interests allows an interviewer to gain a better understanding of their leadership style and motivations.
  • IQ versus EQ. How do they navigate through different business situations?
  • Left brain versus right brain. Better assess their left brain-right brain balance by understanding what they studied and what they do in their spare time.
  • Yesterday, today and tomorrow. This part of the conversation is used to learn more about what guides them and how aware they are of what is impacting business today.
