Korn Ferry has published the 2017 edition of their annual Survey of Board Leadership. This report looks at the trends in board leadership structure for the United States’ S&P 500 companies. The information gathered is as of year-end in 2016. Additionally, Heidrick & Struggles specifically analyzed the motivations behind any change in leadership that occurred within these companies.
Notable findings include:
- Almost half of the S&P 500 companies who hired a new CEO or chairperson also changed their structure in 2016.
- In 2016, retirement was the reason for 70% of succession events within the companies examined.
- 67% of companies became or remained separated following a planned succession in 2016.
