Korn Ferry: Results of Annual Survey of Board Leadership

Korn Ferry has published the 2017 edition of their annual Survey of Board Leadership. This report looks at the trends in board leadership structure for the United States’ S&P 500 companies. The information gathered is as of year-end in 2016. Additionally, Heidrick & Struggles specifically analyzed the motivations behind any change in leadership that occurred within these companies.

Notable findings include:

• Almost half of the S&P 500 companies who hired a new CEO or chairperson also changed their structure in 2016.
• In 2016, retirement was the reason for 70% of succession events within the companies examined.
• 67% of companies became or remained separated following a planned succession in 2016.
