Pearson Partners: From CFO to CEO

A recent report from Pearson Partners surveyed CFOs from Fortune 1000 multinational companies about their roles and career path. It is widely believed that an organization’s CFO is the natural successor for a departing CEO. Their role as CFO has allowed them to interact with compliance, human resources, administration, risk management and information technology side of the organization.

Although it seems like a natural progression, there are several attributes needed to become an effective CEO. Among them:

  • Emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills
  • Leading by example in order to motivate others to move toward a common goal
  • “Servant leadership” –make sure everyone has the right tools for success
  • Problem-solving skills
