Korn Ferry: Emotional Intelligence Plays a High Role in Engineering Success
In this article, Korn Ferry looks at new findings showing that greater emotional intelligence is more important than a high IQ when it comes to success in engineers. Despite prior thought that “book smarts” play a larger role in forecasting success in the technology world, the article argues that these skills are primarily “threshold competencies,” or rather, the required abilities to obtain such a position. However, it’s one’s emotional intelligence that becomes the true stand-out in an engineer’s abilities in regards to success in comparison to his or her peers.
To assess the emotional intelligence of the engineers studied, the Emotional and Social Competence Inventory was used, which measures the following:
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Empathy
- Relationship Awareness
