Korn Ferry: Alternatives to Hiring Your First-Choice CMO

In this article, Korn Ferry looks at the trend of legacy industrial firms who are having a hard time attracting talent for their chief marketing officer position. These firms, often with headquarters in America’s heartland, are finding their first choice CMOs rejecting them, likely due to being away from major cities, a lack of interest in the particular industry, or lower pay than at other companies. Unfortunately, it’s these firms, who are often older and are in the process of transitioning business models, who are in particular need for top marketing talent.

For firms in such a position, Korn Ferry suggests three alternatives to hiring the first choice CMO:

  • Hire an “enlightened” sales leader.
  • Hire an experienced CMO from another sector.
  • Hire a first-time CMO.
