Korn Ferry: Learning from a Bad Boss
Korn Ferry CEO, Gary Burnison, pens a piece encouraging employees to look on the bright side of having a bad boss. Burnison suggests that, although having a boss you dislike can make the workplace less than desirable, such a situation is often a great learning experience. Pointing out that the time during which you will have to interact with a boss you dislike is not indefinite, as either the employee or the boss will eventually leave the company, Burnison advises turning this otherwise negative situation into a beneficial experience.
First and foremost, having a bad boss teaches those around him or her how to not act or treat people. Secondly, enduring such a situation will create strong coping skills. Developing interpersonal skills and building resilience in the face of unpleasant situations are qualities that can be helpful throughout one’s career.
