Korn Ferry: The Benefits and How-To of Leadership Mentoring
Korn Ferry has a published a piece from Daniel Goleman, a regular contributor to Korn Ferry, on the benefits of leaders taking on a mentorship position with their staff. While the clear advantage is an increase to the staff member’s abilities and overall career development, studies show that those who take on a coaching or leadership role benefit themselves, as well. Those who mentored were more committed to and satisfied with their jobs and had higher performance ratings.
However, Goleman notes, the ability to coach and mentor is not a skill that always comes natural for leaders. Some of the advice Goleman offers to executives to help build these skills are:
- Recognize such support is not simply a focus on technical skill building
- Assess your own abilities
- Step back from your own “agenda”
